Science-Fiction Becomes Science-Fact

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Just when you thought that the world of four-wheel drive motoring couldn’t evolve any further, Range Rover has shifted the poles with its new Evoque.  Competitors will be left standing in its dust.   Described as a ‘new vision of luxury motoring’ the Evoque has dramatically changed the world of all-road vehicles, opening the appeal to a whole new generation of drivers, and shaking-up expectations of what it means to drive a 4×4.

Range Rover appears to have discovered a whole new galaxy with the development of the Evoque.  Whilst the hallmark characteristics of the legendary Range Rover stable endure, this vehicle goes way beyond the power, pristine, and practicality, loved by Range Rover purists.

New followers will easily be attracted by its power.  They will however adore the way in which this is achieved in a much more environmentally friendly way. Up to twenty per cent of fuel emissions have been cut.  This has been achieved with developments in the exhaust-engine relationship meaning that less CO2 is released.

The new breed of fan will also be magnetised by a pristine driving experience, in a new way.  The onroad/offroad noise appeals in an entirely new perspective.  A Mahle sound generator ensures that the trademark growl is enhanced.  Advanced computer simulation tools have been deployed to reduce unpleasant background noise.   Developments in engineering also ensure that noise pollution is minimised.   Computational fluid dynamics are at work to ensure that at speed, wind noise is also reduced.

Liberating the best of what Jaguar Land Rover have to offer, the Evoque employs such technological breakthroughs all over the vehicle, not just in its aerodynamics.  Legendary intelligence such as the Terrain Response System are still found and do all the thinking and adjusting on slippery surfaces on and off road.  These extreme looks do however bear comment.  It is possibly the striking profile of the Evoque which will do most to attract new supporters.  Crafting a vehicle for a whole new era, Range Rover have brought in new style consultants such as designer and celebrity Victoria Beckham.

Inside the vehicle this means that the modern cubist touches add a space-age appeal.   Two-tone leather and high-quality finishes will however still delight Range Rover aficionado, there is nothing impractical or redundant in the Evoque.  Legendary space and comfort are still found, and are only enhanced by the ease of use of controls, still conveniently located.    Pure, Dynamic and Prestige trim packages are available, thus accommodating both traditional and new fans.

A high-definition exterior clearly marks the Evoque as distinct to any other 4×4.  A parallelogram on the road, the higher ground clearance and compact wheelbase makes this a real test-tube baby.  Sharp geometric cues flow throughout the body to distinguish the Evoque as a new breed. A combination of diamonds and rhombus lozenges draw your eye to this revolutionary vehicle.

Two Evoque Coupes will soon be available for you to sample the how this feels under your hand.  Your choice of Fuji white with black and red leather interior, or Black with black and red interior will provide an excellent taster.  The five-door Evoque then provides the main course.

Even More Luxury Available From the New Rolls Royce Ghost

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

There may be a perspective that things do not move as fast in the world of luxury cars, as in other sectors of motoring. Perhaps the more measured pace of true craftsmanship is a little less rushed, but then the level of engineering is that much more refined.  It is said, after all, that the best things come to those who wait.   This may certainly be the situation in the case of the new Rolls Royce Ghost, just released.

The developments in this latest iteration of the modern classic are, after all, concerned with style and comfort, rather than speed.  The Rolls Royce has had 170mm added to its wheelbase in the form of the Ghost Extended Wheel Base.

Auto Express reported from the Shanghai Motor Show on the Rolls Royce Ghost Long Wheel Base.  This is a longer, more spacious version of the current car.  The Ghost is already recognised for its long wheelbase and bonnet, which, when combined with the short overhang forward of the front of the front axle and longer overhang behind the rear axle provide the omnipresent Rolls Royce profile.

One can scarcely believe that the comfort of the Ghost could be improved.  However, it is claimed that this development more than doubles the rear legroom of the Ghost ‘short’ wheel base.   Amazingly however, the Extended Wheel Base remains shorter than the Phantom.  The Long Wheel Base will be 5569mm long, and yet the Phantom exceeds at 5834mm, with its stretched version a staggering six metres plus.

It would seem that Rolls Royce do however know what they are doing.  Despite today’s economic climate, they appear to be one company enjoying the ride.  In the first three months of this year, sales are 160% higher than last year.    With the Ghost Extended Wheel Base, the car’s sales should be a likely contributor to further market penetration.

The additional knee room is on top of a blend of luxury that only Rolls Royce can provide.  Four passengers can easily enjoy the cabin with a panoramic sunroof.  New options to maximise comfort include a coolbox inclusive of champagne flutes, a rear privacy telephone, and Rolls-Royce emblazoned headrests.  Interior detailing embraces style with stained black ash wood with stainless steel pinstripes, contrast stitching,

Under the engine of the Long Wheel Base Ghost, a traditional Rolls Royce 6.6 litre twin turbocharged V12 powerhouse provides the car with 555bhp and 575lb ft at just 1500rpm.  This means that the Ghost Extended Wheel Base accelerates from standing to 62mph in just five seconds.

The Ghost Long Wheel Base will only be built to order and production will start later this year.  It is anticipated that many of these cars will see the roads around Shanghai in real life.  Rolls Royce’ dealers in Beijing and Shanghai showed the strongest sales across the world, so it is no surprise that the Extended Wheel Base Ghost was unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show.

Car magazine reports that more Centenary Collection special edition cars were sold to customers in China.   Indeed, two Spirit of Ecstasy Centenary Collection cars were specially commissioned for the Shanghai Motor Show to celebrate 100 years of the Spirit of Ecstasy.  Furthermore, a specially-commissioned China Edition bespoke Ghost was showcased.  The China Edition Ghost features a red interior, gold twin-coachlines, gold-plated Spirit of Ecstasy and stainless steel pinstripes, and is available for select Chinese customers to order. Three new colours, silver and gold packages, coachlines and inlays have also been developed for the Chinese market.

Do You Know What Puts the ‘S’ in S-Class?

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

Celebrating 125 years of engineering excellence, Mercedes-Benz could claim that the S in S-Class could stand for many things – special, superlative, sublime, stunning and steadfast.  In truth, S-Class is an abbreviation of the German word Sonderclasse. Sonder means alone, or on its own, and translates as a special class.  Becoming known as a ‘specially-outfitted car’, the S-Class certainly does enjoy a degree of single-minded perfection that is unrivalled, amongst other cars from the stable, or from the competition.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class truly does stand in a class of its own. Originally, the S could’ve been for Six cylinders.  Today it is more likely to stand for Software, given the technologically-advanced management systems.

S could also stand for Security.  Police forces around the world purchase the S-Class for their work.  Many members of royalty, politicians and other public faces find themselves protected by the S-Class. The armoured version of the car, the S-Guard, is exclusively built at its own facility at Sindelfingen, in Germany

The S could also stand for Scientific.  Being the flagship of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, S-Class cars have led the way in showcasing many of the marque’s innovations.  Over the years these have included both drivetrain technologies as well as interior features.  S could also stand for safety.  The most pioneering safety systems, such as the first seatbelt pre-tensioners, airbags, ABS, traction control, air suspension, and the pre-emptive safety system Pre-Safe, have also been launched in the S-Class.

The S could also stand for Sedan.  The S-Class has piloted the path of Mercedes-Benz in their quest to conquer the luxury sedan market.  The heritage of Mercedes-Benz is marked by the designation of S, and since its official launch almost 40 years ago, the S-Class has certainly represented the pinnacle of everything that Mercedes-Benz has to offer.

The S-Class could contain an S for Sustainable.  It was the first vehicle in green-technology leaders Germany, to be awarded certification for environmentally-friendly components.

Given that the S-Class is the best that Mercedes-Benz has to offer, it is no surprise that this model is offered by Signature Car Hire, making available the world’s most beautiful marques.

S could stand for Sport.  In the portfolio of Signature Car Hire is the Mercedes Benz S350 Blue Tec with AMG Sports Package.  With 320 bhp of torque, one could be forgiven for thinking that this supercar belongs on the track. What is truly class-leading is the Blue Tec engine technology meaning that this super-clean diesel unit makes use of the latest catalytic converters to eliminate up to 80% of emissions.

S could also be for Specialise.  The Mercedes Benz S63 AMG LWB is an outstanding example of the S-Class, with its Special outfitting provided by AMG.   The 6.3 litre V8 engine supercharges the experience, resulting in 518 bhp and a demonstration of true performance with 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds.  The AMG touch continues inside with the Grey Nappa leather upholstery infused with touring car touches making you feel like a race winner.

The S-Class 500 LWB in Silver is another shining example.  It is therefore no surprise that Signature Car Hire also begins with the letter S.

Richard Hammond Dazzled by the New Range Rover Evoque

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

It would seem that none of the Top Gear presenters can help themselves when it comes to awarding critical acclaim to Range Rover’s latest creation.  Even Richard Hammond cannot but heap praise on the new Evoque.

Despite The Hamster’s predilection for the Reasonably Priced Car, the Range Rover Evoque easily changed his mind with its many advantages – features, looks, design, and comfort. He described some of these in one of his most recent articles.

Anything but pedestrian, the Evoque does employ an array of features to win over its fans.   Hammond was instantly dazzled by one of these, which is guaranteed to become one of the Evoque’s most personal of signatures.  The hallmark feature of the new Evoque is a subtly-ensconced light, shining from the underside of the door mirror.  As he notes, this on its own may be handy if you drop your keys, for example.  What is truly distinctive about this feature is that what is projected into the ground is more than just a mere torch beam; it is an outline of the Evoque itself.

Hammond recognised that the unique selling point of the Range Rover Evoque has got to be its looks.  Always the champion of all things short, he highlights that in spite of, and possibly because of, its inimitably-short wheelbase, the Evoque will steal away the buyers of many more expensively-priced estates and SUVs. It is inherently more attractive in this configuration. ‘Stunning-looking’ is how he puts it.

Design-wise, he could only write that ‘here’s hardly a detail of the car I don’t like’.  The car he refers to had the optional LUX pack, a suite of ‘goodies’ including a ‘fabulous full length glass sunroof that lets loads of light in… a Meridian sound system, and touch screen display’.

Given that Hammond tested the three-door model, comfort available exceeds what would be offered in other coupes of that range of luxury.

Hammond modestly slips in the fact that he loved parking his test Evoque outside his house, implying his pride at displaying this car to his neighbours.  One can only imagine that they get very interesting views from time to time with the sorts of cars he’s allowed to bring home from work.  This though was something he truly wanted them to see.  It is quite appropriate therefore that his particular test model provided was Colima Green.   Although Hammond laments that he had to return the Evoque and admits to being more than a little envious of those who will take delivery of their own Evoque, perhaps this night it was the neighbours’ turn to be green with envy.

Despite being a complete unknown, Hammond highlights the fact that this revolutionary Range Rover starting selling out before any of the latest media hype was even written.  ‘A large number of customers have already ordered Evoques and did so almost as soon as the order books were opened’.

With this in mind, we feel it is obvious that the best way to get behind the wheel of one is with prestige self-drive hire.

The reputation of a motoring journalist such as Richard Hammond should open the door to driving one of these.  Yet even he remarks that he’d been waiting a long time to drive one.  He certainly was not disappointed.  Given the demand for these vehicles, a strong suggestion would be to get in line and book one now for your thrilling luxury hire drive.
