Coming Soon To Ferrari

Friday, April 27th, 2012

With Ferrari fans truly treated to a show of note at this year’s Geneva Motor Show last month, speculation is already emerging about what the stable of the prancing horse will have in store for us at next year’s event.   It is anticipated that the debut of the car to replace the Enzo will take centre stage.

The revelation that was the F12 Berlinetta at the International Motor Show in Switzerland this March was a fantastic feast.  Now, all motoring minds are beginning to ponder what could be next.  Conjecture commonly held is that the car could be called the F70, to follow the precedent set by the F40 and F50.

Rumour has it that the ambition of this mid-engined rear-wheel drive supercar is to be faster than the Bugatti Veyron, in both sprint and top-line speed.  In order to achieve this, it will have to display more impressive credentials than the Veyron’s acceleration to 62 mph in just 2.46 seconds.  The power unit required to reach this phenomenal performance with just its rear-wheel drive format is now thought to be provided in the form of the same 6.3 litre V12 that drives the F12 and FF.

This supersedes the earlier supposition that horsepower would come from the direct-injection of a turbocharged V8.  Now the F12’s engine is likely to be subject to some performance-enhancing development of the legitimate kind in order to deliver an expected 800 hp.  This should certainly help the F70 to achieve its ambition.

In addition, the car is expected to feature Kinetic Energy Recovery System, or KERS as more commonly known.  This should partner with a 120 hp electric motor to allow the F70 to be Ferrari’s first production hybrid.  Not only does this mean zero emission under light load, but the net power output increases to 920 hp.

The thoughts are that the F70 should weigh about 2550 lbs.  A carbon fibre body and aluminium chassis should allow this target to be met.

Not surprisingly, the gossip mill predicts that the purchase price of the F70 will not be less than the £450,000 it currently takes to buy an Enzo.

Educated guesses envisage that this will be a limited edition, with a production run in the hundreds.

Design expectations are still subject to intense speculation and rendered images are currently the only visuals available.  We can expect clearer pictures to be available later this year, as preferred and existing customers get the privileged glimpses of the new car, available for pre-release order.  What is known is that we can expect the car to be trademark-amazing.

The Future of Ferrari to Create, Capture and Save Energy

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Whilst the technology that is at the heart of every magnificent sports car from the stable of the prancing horse is undoubted, it would appear that this legendary marque is now diverting their energies, quite literally, into a more eco-friendly approach to supercar design and development.

As resources become scarcer in all fields of nature, science and technology are coming together to see how we can get more out of less.  Given the Ferrari ideal of how can we get more and even more, this represents an interesting marriage of the two philosophies.  The latest news released from Ferrari this week, straight from the horse’s mouth and so to be well believed, indicates the future direction of engine development at the legendary Italian house of race-bred road cars.

It would seem that Ferrari is planning a V12 Hybrid for their upcoming Enzo.  What is truly spectacular though is that whilst being more environmentally-conscious, this will actually result in a power gain, by about as much as 100 hp on the V12 and 110 lb-ft of torque.  This mirrors what was seen on the concept HY-KERS in 2010.  The aim of this technology is for the Ferraris of the future to meet strict CO2 emissions targets, without diluting anything that makes them true Ferraris.  The Enzo will achieve this with its upcoming hybrid system, when released later this year.

The latest release already on the market, the F12 Berlinetta, presented an entirely new generation of V12 engines to the world.  This already made use of Formula 1 technology in the form of the celebrated Kinetic Energy Recovery System, or KERS.  This gives the car even more performance, to deliver an awesome package.

Taking a bearing that will increase the longevity of endangered beasts like V12 combustion engines, various hybrid systems are now under test and development, according to Head of Ferrari, Amedeo Felisa.  He announced that ‘Our hybrid system won’t just be about creating power, but saving energy, too.’  Whilst purists may argue against such a move, and criticise the added cost, Felisa continued that ‘the technology is expensive today, but the road ahead is open and evolution will bring down the cost and weight disadvantages. I’m not saying when, but it is possible that this technology will be on all Ferraris. It has been designed to fit all our future architecture, and if we go ahead it will be fitted as standard. It is not the sort of thing you offer as an option.

Felisa added that Ferrari may look at engines from even more alternate perspectives in the future.  Demonstrating the Ferrari feel for picking up on trends he asked ‘Why not six cylinders? It is far away in the future, perhaps, but it is clear perceptions have altered.  Even in the US, where until a few years ago eight cylinders was the minimum, it is clear attitudes have changed. We have to think in that direction,’ he concluded.

Football Fans Meet Petrolheads in Fantastic Supercar Sale

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

After offering his customised Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Convertible DUB edition for auction earlier this year, it would seem that David Beckham is continuing to spring clean his fleet.

Almost half a million pounds worth of pre-loved cars will soon be up for sale, it has been announced, although exactly when and where are still unknown.  The profile of the former owner however is unlikely to make for a discreet sale.

It is reported that this motoring feast courtesy of Becks is to make room in his British home.  Added to which of course is the fact that he doesn’t actually get the chance to drive them, since he and Posh spend most of their time at their Los Angeles mansion these days.

The five cars are thus very likely to be low mileage models.  Since none of them are the Ford Escort he regularly drove to practice when at Old Trafford, they have not had much use when new or since.  Two Bentleys, a BMW 645, a Lamborghini Gallardo, and a Range Rover Sport present the portfolio of four-wheeled vehicles for sale.  Three Harley-Davidson motorcycles will also hit the market.

A real trader when it comes to cars, David Beckham certainly seems to want to taste all the models out there at least once in his life.  His collection has included everything from Bentleys and BMWs to Cadillacs and even a Hummer.  In 2005 his BMW M3 that he had owned since 1997 sold for £90,000, turning a tidy profit from the £44,000 purchase price.  Last year his Porsche 911 Carrera sold on eBay for £136,000.  It would seem that he truly has the Midas touch.

Obviously the Beckham enchantment isn’t just something bottled in Victoria’s perfumes.  Buying a Beckham-owned Beemer is certainly something of which many fans dream.  Whilst the Rolls-Royce offered for sale had been de-personalised to some degree, removing the trademark ‘23’ monogrammed onto the front seats, it is unknown if, or to what degree the current catalogue of cars was ever made bespoke, and if so, how much of the magic remains.

Whatever the degree of customisation or not, it is highly likely that theses cars will exceed their value and attract a premium all of their own.

Tamara Ecclestone Shows Taste in Her Choice of Car

Monday, April 9th, 2012

Both the behaviour and preferences of the offspring of our rich and famous often come under scrutiny for all the wrong reasons.  Pleasantly enough, the divine Ms Ecclestone is proving herself to top of the class instead.

This is one heiress who certainly shines and not just because of all her glittering gowns and gorgeous gems.  Tamara Ecclestone has just released a photoshoot of her with her new Ferrari 599 GTO.  Demonstrating that she is a lot more than just daddy’s little girl, she is seen to be displaying a much more mature sense of direction with her selection of the Ferrari supercar.

Whilst one may argue that being the daughter of Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone is more than likely to turn her into a fan of fast flashy cars, at least she presents some degree of personal prowess in choosing this 599 GTO.

Posing with the car for a portfolio of a dozen shots, Tamara was promoting her television programme, the reality show Billion $$$ Girl, to be seen on Channel V in USA.  Seen as an attempt to carve out a career of her own, it may admirable at least that she chose such a worthy steed on which to ride out.  The svelte beauties photographed certainly made a fitting pair.

Dee Gets VIP Treatment at Geneva

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

Dee was treated to some real VIP treatment at this year’s Gevena Motor Show. VIP access to all the big name stands paid off, allowing Dee to get up close to all the show stopping supercars including the Lamborghini Aventador J, a one off production car for the show, rumoured to have sold for a cool 2 million! No-one was allowed access to this car, but Dee managed to get onto the stand to have his pictured snapped as many onlookers gazed in awe with a touch of jealousy.

Other prestige marques giving Dee all access VIP treatment included Maserati, Brabus, Ferrari, Range Rover….to name a few!

On return to the UK Dee said, ‘This years show was fantastic. The cars were amazing and it was good to catch up with so many of the guys from the marques we deal with already. We made some new contacts which we look to pursue to increase our fleet of customised vehicles which have proved to be a successful addition to our fleet already. All round, a great show!

Ferrari Unveil The F12 Berlinetta at the Geneva Motor Show 2012

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

The most scintillating of entrées preceded the Geneva Motor Show last week.  The world’s fastest-accelerating car was unveiled in the form of the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

In almost less time than it will take you to gasp, the car achieves the 0-60 sprint.  It reaches 62 mph in just 3.1 seconds.  Guaranteed to take your breath away with its beautiful looks as well as its effervescent performance, the price tag may also leave you speechless.  Some may say however that the F12 Berlinetta is worth every penny of the £250,000 it costs.

The fluid design of this stunning new supercar shows just what is forthcoming in terms of acceleration, but the dynamic lines are also wondrous to the eye.  Contemporary Ferrari hallmark front LED headlights are superimposed on a lowered and wider-aspect front grill.  The bonnet leads the beholder to look at the continuing curve over the front wheel arches and along the superlative scarlet bodywork.   Even this is an innovation in itself, being a new tone of Ferrari red, being catalogued as Rosso Berlinetta’ a three-layer colour.

Not only is the sculptured silhouette an artwork to enjoy visually, but it is easy to imagine how the aerodynamics contribute to the blistering pace of this car’s acceleration.  It is not surprising therefore to learn that the car’s looks are the result of yet another partnership between the Ferrari Styling Centre, and the iconic Italian house of style, Pininfarina.

The F12 Berlinetta has been built to replace the 599 GTB Fiorano and should prove a worthy successor when it goes on sale at the Geneva Motor Show.  Whilst the top speed of the F12 Berlinetta, at 212 mph, is not as high as that of the fastest ever Ferrari, the Enzo of 2002 with a top speed of 217.5 mph, it does surpass the 205 mph of the 599 GTB Fiorano.  It also reaches 62 mph in 0.6 seconds less than the 599 GTB Fiorano.  It gets to 124 mph in only 8.5 seconds, which takes the predecessor 11 seconds.  It must be noted that the Enzo did not accelerate as fast, taking 3.65 seconds to reach 62 mph, and new it cost £365,000.  A good second-hand Enzo will however cost up to a million pounds today.

In order to achieve this phenomenal performance, the F12 Berlinetta employs a 6.3 litre V12 naturally-aspirated direct injection engine, which lends over 740 bhp to the picture.  Acceleration is of course aided by the seven-speed automatic dual clutch gearbox, to add true F1 performance to this production car.

The power to weight ratio also supports driving the car forward at such a blistering pace.  The F12 Berlinetta is lighter than its bloodline relative, with a lower centre of gravity.  The weight is also distributed further towards the rear of the chassis.  This is made possible by the twelve kinds of alloy used to craft the immaculate body shell.     Combined with improved aerodynamics and efficiencies, as well as new assembly techniques, these result in a twenty percent improvement in body stiffness and 70 kilo reduction in body weight.  Even fuel efficiency is thirty percent better than before.

Indeed it is this focus on the total vehicle which has made the F12 such a staggering performer.  Even drag resistance has been a topic of the research which brought the car to market.   The beautiful bonnet is not just pretty to look at.  It forms part of the ‘Aero Bridge’ which generates downforce by channeling air away from the upper parts of the car to its lower regions.

What is reassuring to know though is that development also focused on the car’s ability to stop, as well as making it go.  Stopping distances have been reduced by better cooling to the brakes with the addition of a second Active Brake Cooling system, which opens flaps to the brake cooling ducts only when the pads get hot.

Immaculate Pininfarina styling continues inside the car, and yet the performance aspect is maintained, with Ferrari stating that the design specification was that the ‘cockpit is designed around the driver’.  This is epitomised in the race-ready dashboard of F1-style steering wheel with gear change paddles, and carbon fibre and aluminium air vents, ensconced in sumptuous hand-stitched leather to surround the driver in this most luxurious of sports car.

Ferrari is suitably proud of its new supercar, rating it ‘at the top of the high-performance league’.  They said that ‘this is, in fact, the most powerful and high-performance Ferrari road car ever launched thanks to the incredibly efficient engine.  Together with advanced vehicle architecture, aerodynamics, components and electronic controls, guarantee unsurpassed driving involvement whatever the road or track.’  We prefer their statement that the F12 Berlinetta is ‘a perfect balance of uncompromising aerodynamics with harmonious proportions.’

Pictures from Day 2 of Signature’s Trip to Geneva Motor Show 2012

Saturday, March 17th, 2012

Here they are, the much awaited pictures from day 2 of Signature’s expedition to the Geneva Motor Show 2012….and what a day! Another whistle stop tour of all the big marques ensued, which included Lamborghini, to see the hugely anticipated Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. The gossip was a little off the mark, and it turned out to be a one off Lamborghini Aventador J, which rumor has it sold to a buyer for a cool 2 million!

Other pit stops were to the Bugatti and Zonda stands. The Zonda Pagani seemed to make a few heads turn, as did the nearby Maserati Gran Tourismo.

Ferrari was a favourite with all the signature team, with the F12 Berlineta taking center stage, although the 458 spider looked pretty hot too!

Here are some of our favorite pics from day 2, which also include some great snaps of the BMW Shnitzer M5 and M3, the Porsche 911 Lumma, Tech Art Porsche Cayenne and 977 and the Range Rover Evoque Hamonn. These customization specialists really did some amazing work to these well-known marques and the guys had lots of great discussions which could see Signature bring more customized vehicles to our fleet.

Not to be missed are the classics including Rolls Royce and Bentley, offering some sophisticated beauty alongside all the show stopping performance supercars.

In summary, a great show this year. Let us know which cars you think we should pick to add to our every expanding Signature fleet of prestige and performance hire cars.

Day 1 At The Geneva Motor Show for Signature

Friday, March 16th, 2012

It was a mad first day for the Signature team at the 2012 Geneva Motors Show. A 5 am flight to catch, followed by a day of supercar spotting and an evening of socialising was the day’s agenda, and the guys certainly made the most of it!

Eager to spot the latest must have prestige car for the fleet, the guys had their work cut out with such a wide selection to choose from. Show stoppers included the Aston Martin Zagato and the Ferrari F12 Berlingetta, not to mention the Lamborghini LP700 concept car. The jury is still out on the new Bentley SUV, but the Range Rover Evoque Cabriolet and the Range Rover Evoque by Hammon got thumbs up all round.

The guys also stopped to look at the mini cooper john works, and the mini clubvan, in addition to Mercedes S63 AMG and the new BMW i3 concept car.

There was so much to see, and another supercar day planned today, but perhaps we should let the pictures do the talking!

Geneva Motor Show Delivers on its Promise

Wednesday, March 14th, 2012

The much-awaited Geneva Motor Show is only half-way through its two week showcase of motoring excellence and yet it has already brought us some fabulous new models.

Whilst over 260 exhibitors put their new cars on display, there were a few that stole the show.

The Rolls Royce Phantom II certainly falls into this category.  In the spirit of Sir Henry Royce, the Phantom II certainly does ‘take the best that exists and make it better’.  Whilst ensuring what makes the Phantom Saloon, Phantom Drophead Coupé and Phantom Coupé so quintessentially Rolls Royce is not compromised, but is enhanced, the Series II incredibly moves the marque forwards.

New LED headlights emphasise the restyled new front-end, with refined bumpers and rectangular light apertures.  They are not only cosmetic however, being the first to be standard on a production car.  Enhanced safety is the result since LED lights are electronically-controlled and reflected to focus headlamp beams in the direction of travel, including curved light functionality.

Such driver comforts seem to flow throughout this superb car.  Not only is safety enhanced, with other features such as the rear path prediction for easier reversing, but so is route enjoyment, with the larger control centre display.  Satellite navigation just became easier.

No aspect is left untouched.  The drivability is enhanced as well with the introduction of a new eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear differential.  The V12 direct injection engine has been made more efficient with improvements to both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

A marque of equal prestige to Rolls Royce is Aston Martin. They brought eight models to the show but the new V8 Vantage certainly took pride of place in their line-up.  The 2012 release sees the most advanced package of improvements since the launch of the Vantage S in 2008.  The optional gearbox that is available received an upgrade, so that new owners now have the choice of a seven-speed Sportshift II automated manual gearbox, instead of the standard six-speed gearbox.  A sportier experience awaits with this seventh gear, closer ratios, lower final drive revs and more responsive gear changes.

Voicing this more sportsmanlike attitude, the exterior proclaims its performance credentials.  A larger air intake is ensconced in an aerodynamic splitter on the lowered front bumper. Along the side race-day sills emphasise its pedigree.  To the rear, a dramatic diffuser signs off on the package.

Another marque which had fans holding their breath is Bentley.  Delivering on so much speculation, they released their concept SUV, the EXP 9 F.  For a concept car, this design presents the possibility of driving everything that represents Bentley style, grace and power, in the 4×4 format.  Amazingly, the sportiness of Bentley’s racing heritage, luxury architecture, and exemplary comfort are all captured in the EXP 9 F.  They describe the result as the ‘absolute pinnacle of the sport utility vehicle sector’. Recognisable aspects such as the Bentley matrix grill, circular head lights, and rear haunches of the vehicle are retained, and yet effortless fit into the off-road mould.  Many more styling cues, including those in the lights and wheels, reflect the ‘Bentley Set’ days with references to the Bentley Blower and others from the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Inside, luxury and utility are fused in harmony. From the advanced entertainment technology featuring easy to use touch-screen control, right down to the reversible silk and wool floormats, and everything in between, a practical aspect has been designed into the plush interior.  Traditional hand-finished materials incorporate more durable veneers, and even the tailgate allows itself to function as a viewing bench or picnic table.

The concept has been developed using a W12 6.0 litre engine, capable of 600 bhp and 800 Nm of torque.  Whilst this may only be a placeholder, it nonetheless sets new benchmarks for 4×4 vehicles.

The Italians are always going to bring some excitement and flair to the Swiss Show.  This year the neighbours certainly caused a stir.  The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta is punted as the most exciting new Ferrari in an eon, and the Ferrari California presents a fresh look at this iconic supercar.

Debuted in the brand new hues of Rosso Berlinetta and Aluminium, the F12 is the most powerful and capable road car ever produced by Ferrari.  Transaxle architecture, revolutionary alloys construction and a 200-bar direct-injection 6262cc 65° V12 engine are all crafted to make the most progressive Ferrari yet.

Bugatti were not to be outdone and chose to unveil the Veyron 16.4 Sport Vitesse.  The fastest roadster ever met its public this week, and instantly took their breath away.  True recipient of the title of supercar, the Veyron Sport Vitesse, with its 7.9 litre W16 engine reaches a top speed of 255 mph, and sprints to 62 mph in just 2.6 seconds.  The drive system, chassis and body all complement this electrifying performance.  The body though has, understandably undergone radical treatment to arrive at the Sport Vitesse. Larger than life air intakes and front and roof spoilers, together with a carbon fibre and leather interior make this open-top car a comfortable yet powerful sportster.

It is quite possible that Lamborghini stole the show however.  So much anticipation had been focused on a new edge to the already-amazing Lamborghini Aventador.  Fans will not be disappointed with the resulting Aventador J that was presented.  The 515 kW, 700 bhp roadster is quite possibly what everyone came to Geneva to see.   More than just an open-top version of the already amazing Aventador, the J looks to motorsport specifications for its ultimate motivation. A ‘Carbonskin’ body, new twelve-cylinder engine, and even a new paint hue for the monocoque all highlight how impressive a step forward is the Aventador J.

The heartbreaking silhouette ensures that in true Lamborghini style ‘form follows function’. A narrower front aspect and wider rear profile, combined with everything that flows immaculately in between, contribute to uncompromising dynamics.

We expect to see and hear a lot more about these cars that are redefining what performance and good looks are all about.
