The rousing ride that the 2.2 litre engine provides is going to keep you hiring this car more than once. The heavy-duty engine delivers a soaring top speed of 113 mph. Speed is the platform that the engine is built on: the Viano can go from 0 - 62 mph in 11.1 seconds. The diesel engine has been assembled with a focus on lowering emissions: not many luxury cars for multiple passengers can have low fuel urban consumption at 27.7 MPG. The Viano achieves this reduction in fuel consumption effortlessly. As you operate the 5-speed automatic transmission of the car, the engine will direct the Viano to move with a contrasting mix of force and grace. The chance of the Viano moving in a way that you do want is eliminated by operating the Active Body Control feature. This control awakens sensors that calm any hint of movement on jagged road surfaces. The Viano is a car that thinks and feels for drivers who want more than just a mechanical motor.
The Viano follows a key tenet of Mercedes-Benz design philosophy: symmetry. The body of the luxury 8-seater car is sleek and smooth: a black exterior is the site for a host of design features that will provide the canvas for an excellent self drive hire journey. Covered in black metallic paint, the body of the car has Bi-Xenon headlamps, ideal for driving during the night or early in the morning for laser-sharp vision on the road. If you are driving the Viano at night, you want to know that your safety is at the forefront of where you are going. Rest assured by the mirror glass of this Mercedes-Benz. It has specifically been curved in such a way that maximises your line of vision. The motifs of the Viano's black leather interior put forward the idea that luxury cars are comfortable for large groups of people. If you are travelling to a far destination during self drive hire, your passengers will be enveloped in plush comfort due to the ergonomic structure of the seats. Ergonomic seat design draped in soft leather soothes passengers during long trips. The seats allow you as a passenger to move as far back as one inch in short spurts to create more space for yourself. Whether you need the Viano for company car hire or if you are taking your family for a day trip, the Mercedes-Benz Viano proves the idea that luxury goes beyond the idea of a 2-seater supercar. Luxury is truly about sharing the pleasure of motoring with your passengers. Thanks to the Viano, you can share the trademark Mercedes-Benz opulence today.
The expressive new front section has a restyled radiator grille incorporating 3 silver painted louvres with chrome strips and the trade mark 3-pointed star takes pride of place in the centre. This new-look grille is flanked by redesigned headlamps featuring the signature 'arched' shape common to many of our Mercedes-Benz self hire drive passenger cars. The Viano also has larger exterior mirrors, complete with integrated indicators and mirror caps painted in a matching body colour. For added safety, the curvature of the mirror glass has been adjusted to maximise the field of vision. Further styling touches include redesigned front wings, a new body-coloured front bumper, and single-piece tail light design and metallic paint finish as standard.
The latest generation Viano is every inch a Mercedes-Benz, with high quality materials and finishes throughout the cabin. Comfort is key, especially for a corporate hire driver, and several intelligent design features have been introduced to enhance the Viano experience, essential for business travel. For example, the sliding door has been redesigned, bringing the thumb-operated button closer to the handle to improve ergonomics. Likewise, the upper control panel rocker switches have been replaced by the same high quality push buttons featured across the passenger car range. The symbols have also been reworked to improve usability. As you'd expect, space is plentiful and convenient features range from a folding table, ideal for on the move meetings, to an optional cool box. But beyond functionality, there are touches of pure luxury too.
The intelligent optional parking assistant, Parktronic, helps you to manoeuvre and park in tight spots. The system uses ultrasound signals from the front and rear bumpers which are reflected by obstacles. A combination of a coloured display and acoustic warnings indicate how much space you have available. If you get too close to a potential obstacle, you receive a continuous audible warning.
The new Viano sees the introduction of a range of EU5 compliant diesel engines that offer reduced emissions and fuel consumption. The new 4-cylinder engines offer superior power and torque and significant efficiency benefits and achieves up to 38.7 mpg combined while CO2 emissions drop as low as 192 g/km - an 8 per cent improvement on both counts. Meanwhile, the range-topping V6 3.0 CDI engine sees a 6 per cent improvement in fuel economy and emissions yet still produces rated output of 224 hp. All three engines are fitted with Diesel Particulate Filters as standard - one of many features designed to ensure the cleanest performance possible.
Developed specifically for the new generation engines, the ECO Gear transmission has a larger gear ratio spread than its predecessor. The shorter 1st gear offers outstanding pulling power at low speeds, while the extended 6th gear ratio ensures lower revs at high cruising speeds. On long distance journeys, this helps significantly improve fuel economy and passenger comfort.
The Viano really comes into its own when overtaking on hills, when pulling a trailer or caravan, or carrying heavy goods. This is because, in addition to the independent suspension all round, the air suspension for the rear axles uses automatic level control to maintain optimum weight distribution for the best possible traction and steering in all situations. Air suspension also makes loading and unloading that much easier, as it lets you raise or lower the Viano's rear floor by up to 2 inches (50 mm) at the touch of a button.
The new Viano incorporates a package of BlueEFFICIENCY energy saving measures, designed to complement the new range of EU5 emissions compliant engines. These include ECO Start/Stop functionality for models with manual transmission. When the Viano slows to an idle - for example, when waiting at traffic lights - the system shuts off the engine to save fuel. The engine then automatically starts again as soon as the driver is ready to pull away. An ingenious technology that is as unobtrusive as it is effective. Other BlueEFFICIENCY measures include low friction tyres to reduce rolling resistance, battery management optimisation, and ultra-efficient fuel pump technology. Even the power steering has been optimised to ensure it uses the minimum energy. Together, these innovative engineering features offer significant environmental and financial benefits without compromising power and refinement.
On wet, winter roads the Viano's rear-wheel drive and all-round independent suspension provide better steering and exceptional handling. In conjunction with air suspension for the rear axle, rear-wheel drive also gives you better traction when you're on mountain roads or when the rear seats are occupied. It also provides excellent handling and driving characteristics along with great ride comfort. What's more, if you've forgotten something, the Viano's small turning circle (11.8 metres for the compact and long versions) lets you turn around fast.
Combining dynamic handling with optimum comfort, Active Body Control (ABC) comes as standard on the new Viano. Whenever any unwanted body movements arise, they are immediately detected by strategic sensors which then dampen all low frequency body vibrations and any bounce, pitch and roll: in effect, ironing out uneven road surfaces. This pioneering technology ensures unprecedented comfort and handling stability.
Flexibility and ease of operation - these are the hallmarks of the latest Viano's seating system. Standard seat layouts can be revised to accommodate multi passenger comfort - there's even a fold out table between the two centre row seats, ideal for corporate hire travel.
As ever, seats on the new Viano can be configured in a range of ways. For example, the 3-seat bench can be positioned in the centre or rear of the vehicle and face-to-face conference seating is also easily achieved. Whichever set-up you require, the Viano's seat rails have been redesigned to ensure even smoother operation. For maximum versatility, optional seating arrangements on the new Viano include 2-2-2, 2-3-2 or, on our 8-seater 2-3-3.
Depending on the line, the Viano will seat up to eight people or give you up to 4,610 litres (162.8 cubic feet ) of luggage space. And despite this spacious interior, it's still remarkably easy to manoeuvre in city traffic, easy to park and compact enough to fit into standard garages. The Viano's seats have been designed to offer maximum comfort even on the longest journeys. All seats in the Viano are ergonomically designed and have three-point seatbelts. Single passenger seats have armrests and adjustable backrests. They move forward or back in 1 inch (25 mm) stages, to give you a more flexible space and passengers plenty of legroom where they need it.
The multi-function steering wheel with trip computer allows you to perform essential tasks without taking your hands off the wheel. Change radio station, adjust the volume, review your journey data, switch tracks on a CD, take a telephone call, check on the engine - the diverse range of functions coupled with simplicity of use leaves you free to give the road your full attention. What's more, this latest generation steering wheel enhances the Viano's innate sense of style with a new 4-spoke design, updated buttons and matt chrome finish trim elements. In the instrument cluster, a high-resolution display shows trip information such as fuel consumption and mileage.
The Viano's semi-automatic climate control system keeps everyone in optimum comfort, ideal for business self drive hire. It has temperature and air-flow control, pollen filter, and 'residual heat utilisation' for heating and ventilation when the engine is switched off. Electrically operated, side-opening rear air vents and roof ducting, in conjunction with optional rear air conditioning, keeps the air inside the Viano fresh and at just the right temperature.
Available as an option on manual models, Start-off Assist takes the hard work out of hill starts. It maintains the brake pressure for up to two seconds after the pedal has been released, to stop you rolling backwards.
As a large MPV with seating for up to 8 people the Viano's chassis must be able to adapt to a wide range of loads. And it does so with ease thanks to the newly developed suspension. Both front and rear axles have been completely redesigned and include retuned dampers, re-engineered torsion bars, bearings and transverse links. As a result, the Viano's handling is precise and predictable and the ride quality is impeccable - whether it's laden with passengers and luggage or occupied solely by the driver.
In adverse road conditions, sharp cornering or abrupt braking, a vehicle can quickly begin to skid. The Viano's latest-generation ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) works together with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBV) to restore stability in these situations. Sensors monitor individual wheel speeds, yaw rate (body lean) and sideways movement. When they detect vehicle instability, brake and active engine control units apply precise pressure to individual wheels and electronically reduce or increase engine torque, as required.
Research shows that most drivers press the brake pedal too slowly or too briefly in emergency situations. To compensate for this, the Brake Assist (BAS) technology provides maximum-power braking within a fraction of a second. This significantly reduces the stopping distance.
If the driver accelerates too abruptly and one of the driven wheels starts to spin, the Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) helps the wheel to regain sufficient traction. It does this using the same sensor signals as ABS, but to detect wheel spin rather than wheel lock. It then brakes the spinning wheel and reduces engine torque to stabilize the vehicle.
Steering is important even while braking. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) uses sensors to monitor the speed of each wheel. If the system detects that the wheels are about to lock during emergency braking, ABS repeatedly releases and applies the brakes for fractions of seconds, so that the wheels continue to turn. This allows the vehicle to stop faster and remain steerable.
All seats are fitted with three-point seatbelts with high performance belt tensioners and force limiters that automatically take up slack on detection of a collision, then yield to prevent the pressure becoming excessive.
Part of feeling at home is feeling safe. And you'll do both in the Viano. The structure of the Viano is carefully designed to channel the energy of an impact along predefined paths in front, side, rear or head-on collisions. Energy-absorbing deformable elements and crumple zones increase the protection provided by the high-strength passenger cell.
More is better If an accident does happen, the intelligent restraint systems minimise the effects of impact. Driver and passenger airbags are standard on all Viano models.Sensors in the passenger seat determine the extent of the airbag's deployment. Thorax sidebags (standard in the Ambiente) are optionally available for driver and front passenger, as are window sidebags. Thorax sidebags are not available for swivel seats.
Adaptive Break Lights
A clear intent New for the Viano, the innovative adaptive brake light feature helps to prevent rear collisions by effectively signalling emergency braking. When braking pressure exceeds 75% of its maximum level at speeds of 50 km/h or over, the Brake Assist (BAS) system activates the adaptive brake lights. The brake lights flash during the critical braking situation, providing a strong visual alert to the vehicles behind. If braking persists until the vehicle is stationary, the hazard warning lights are automatically activated. If the critical situation passes, brake light function returns to normal when the brake pedal is released.
Eyes in the back of your head Discretely located above the Viano's rear number plate, the optional Rearview Camera provides a clear image of the area immediately behind the vehicle. As soon as reverse gear is engaged, this image is displayed on the optional COMAND multimedia system's high-resolution display. This enables drivers to reverse more safely and significantly reduces the risk of costly bumps and scrapes.
Speedtronic Variable Speed Limiter
Improved safety and economy Even the most conscientious drivers can find it all too easy to climb above the legal speed limit - or exceed the appropriate speed for a particular driving situation. Speedtronic Variable Speed Limiter addresses this issue, enabling drivers to adhere to a specified maximum speed without having to constantly monitor their driving. This not only enhances road safety but also helps improve fuel economy. The system lets drivers set their maximum speed in 1 mph increments, with the chosen speed displayed in the instrument cluster. The set speed cannot then be exceeded unless the throttle is pressed to its limit. Should the set speed be exceeded - for example, going downhill - a visual and audible warning is issued to alert the driver. In addition, Speedtronic offers a cruise control function that maintains a constant speed specified by the driver.
Have it all The COMAND multimedia system meets all your entertainment, navigation and communication requirements.Based around a 6.5" high-resolution display screen, the new generation system includes advanced satellite navigation. An extensive range of digitised maps are now stored on the unit's hard drive and TMC (Traffic Message Channel) ensures up-to-date travel information. Audio equipment includes RDS radio, single CD, and MP3/iPod compatibility. A Video-DVD replay function can be enjoyed when the vehicle is stationary. Bluetooth interface enables compatible mobile phones to be paired with the unit for hands-free phone calls and both Linguatronic voice control and multi-function steering wheel are now standard. So most controls can be operated without taking your hands from the wheel or your attention from the road. For safe, stress-free reversing, the optional Rearview Camera can also be specified with the COMAND unit.
The soundtrack to your journey Fitted as standard on the new Viano, the latest Audio 20 system provides an exceptional listening experience. The single CD player is complemented by an RDS radio with traffic message decoder and 10 station preset memory per waveband. An Aux-in socket is fitted in the glovebox for iPod/MP3 connectivity. The system is intuitive and easy to operate using the integrated keypad and control buttons or via the multifunction steering wheel.
