For those of you not up on the automotive marketing lingo, a halo car is the flagship car in a marque’s range. For Porsche, for example, the halo car is the 911 – a model which has the potentially to instantly convey everything the marque stands for.
For Mercedes, this was perhaps once the AMG GT S, which produced a not inconsiderable 503BHP and could race up to 60MPH in just 3.5 seconds. Now, however, rumour has it that they are once again raising the bar, and hell bent on creating something that will have the “greatest performance of any Mercedes yet.”
Chatting to AutoBlog, the German manufacturer has confirmed that the car will be powered by a “V12 paired to an electric motor and battery pack”, and hinted that their intentions with their new hybrid engine are very serious indeed – think Ferrari levels of performance. If anything can help it achieve this aim, it’s probably the new hybrid engine, and as a bonus it will deliver more eco-friendly performance that will please the regulators.
Nothing is going to happen any time soon, but it’s thrilling to know that Mercedes continue to push the boundaries of automotive engineering. We look forward to seeing the new, shinier halo in future!
