hat’s what Lamborghini have done to their Aventador, and the results are simply spectacular. When the original Aventador was introduced in 2011; the successor to the decade-old Murciélago, it was instantly heralded as the next step in supercar evolution. Brutal yet beautiful, the distinctive vehicle combined incredible power, precision handing and superior engineering in a package that left competitors choking on its dust.
Now Lamborghini have yet again raised the stakes, with a stunning convertible version that allows drivers to feel the wind in their hair as they race along at up to 217 MPH. A lot of thought – not to mention artistry – has gone into the car’s design, and the new carbon fibre roof is a triumph of symmetry. With striking, hard lines and hexagonal windows that conjure up the image of a robotic, angry fly, the car is a joy to behold from above – not least because those windows allow you a glimpse of its sexy V12 6.5 litre engine.
The roof, supported by a redesigned rear pillar, comes in two parts that weigh less than 6kg each, and can be removed and stored in the front luggage compartment within seconds. A wind deflector fits snugly on the front windshield frame, and can also be removed for a more full-on experience that ensures you don’t miss a single growl from the car’s mighty engine.
Not that, in fairness, the experience could ever be anything but full-on: the car features an aspirated V12 engine delivering 700 BHP and 509 ft-lb of torque, which was specifically developed for the Aventador. Coupled with the innovative Independent Shifting Rods (ISR) 7-speed gearbox, push-rod suspension and a Start-Stop system that uses lightning-fast supercapacitors, it guarantees a phenomenal ride, not to mention a 0-62 time of just 3 seconds.
