Whilst the British media, the Sunday Times almost two months previously to be exact, leaked the story of who had won this coveted challenge, we were able to keep a lid on the fact that we had won the privilege of delivering our Mercedes S63 AMG to designer Sarah Burton to deliver Katherine Middleton’s Wedding Dress on 29th April 2011 in time for the Royal Wedding.
This was no mean feat after Sarah Burton arrived at the Goring Hotel, stepped out of our car, and into a flash of paparazzi bulbs at Kate Middleton’s temporary pied-à-terre in Belgravia. Whilst the late McQueen’s 36-year-old- protégée had been punted as a likely winner of the most desired fashion task and accolade of the decade, Sarah Burton excelled in creating a dress worthy of a princess. Whilst a wide fur-fringed hood covered almost all of Sarah Burtons face, it was easily identifiable as from being from Alexander McQueen’s indicative last season’s collection.
After all, our Mercedes S63 AMG doesn’t deserve to be kept quiet either. The youthful front end, with distinctive 25 mm flared wheel arches, power-dome inscribed bonnet, and tinted headlamps made this car truly special for the occasion. The almost-discreet rear end and all four exhaust outlets shined beautifully in the limelight however.
The bride-to-be arrived later at the Goring Hotel. She is believed to have been inspired by the Alexander McQueen dress worn by friend and fashion editor Sara Buys for her wedding to the Duchess of Cornwall’s son Tom Parker-Bowles. Whilst the ceremony at Westminster Abbey was to be the eventual debut of the gown, we think its first ride in life, in our S63 AMG, was a fitting purpose for our smart car.
