Mercedes Expands Its Range Yet Again at the Detroit Auto Show

15c8_003Mercedes GLE Coupe has been unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show today. The 585bhp powerhouse, called the Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S-Model Coupe, will be a direct rival for the BMW X6.

Known as the GLE Coupe, this new model replaces the marque’s old M-class range and is aimed straight at a hotly-contested market dominated by the Range Rover Sport, the Porsche Cayenne and the BMW X6.

Featuring a sloping roofline, this five-door car has the stylish yet bullish M-class front end -complete with giant Mercedes badge, naturally – coupled with sweeping sides and a surprisingly pert bottom that’s dominated by keyhole-shaped taillights.

img_4618Inside, the racy SUV features a compact ‘sports’ steering wheel and sports seats, making it feel more like some of its smaller cousins than a 4×4. The Mercedes standard of luxury is also never far away, and the spacious cabin feels very comfortable, something augmented by the excellent infotainment system found in all Mercedes models.

If you go for the entry-level GLE 350 model then you’ll find a 3-litre turbocharged V6 under the bonnet, producing 620m of torque. Opt for the GLE 400 instead and you’ll get a twin-turbo petrol V6, while the GLE 450 AMG boasts the most powerful engine option. The AMG also comes with a raft of other augmentations, such as 21-inch wheels.

Whatever model you choose, it will come with a 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission, as well as 4Matic all-wheel drive. Technological wonders in the GLE range include Mercedes’ Dynamic Select system, which controls other systems in the car to produce an optimised ride according to the driver’s tastes. The Active Curve System is also something to look out for, which is designed to tilt the car into corners and avoid body roll – a pretty important feature on a tall SUV.

Signature Car Hire is sure the GLE Coupe will make waves in the SUV industry. Watch this space for more details!
