Mini Countryman Gets John Cooper Works Treatment

The Mini Countryman has finally been blessed with the attention of the Godfather of the Mini line.  The new JCW Countryman has just been released.

A super edition of Mini’s comfortable and convenient people-carrier in miniature has just seen the light of day.  Whilst the Countryman has been around for decades before the MPV phrase was coined, this efficient little hatchback has now driven itself into the crossover segment.

Representing the élite performance development section of Mini, John Cooper Works cars offer that extra-special something.  The JCW Countryman is no exception. The pioneer spirit of the Mini, the essence of the Countryman body type, and the determination of World Rally Championships campaigned by Minis of the past, all truly shine through in this edition, to début at this month’s International Motor Show in Paris.

It is the most powerful Mini yet and the first with all-wheel drive.  A new version of the 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers 218 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels.  This is thanks to all-new four-wheel drive.  Valvetronic variable valve timing, direct injection, and a twin-scroll turbocharger are part of the line-up to deliver this phenomenal power.  It is the same amount of power after all as the JCW GP hatchback, but with even more torque.  Performance credentials include a sprint to 62 mph in 7 seconds flat.  Tighter handling than usual is also provided.  Built by Magna Steyr in Austria, the car’s engine is flown in from the main Mini plant in England.

A sportier appearance is made possible with a full aero kit, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, a suite of seven exterior finishes, and three roof-mirror combinations, black, white or the JCW-exclusive red, and optional stripes to match the roof.

The new Countryman accommodates four passengers with a configuration including individual rear bucket seats, or five with a rear bench seat instead.  This equates to 1170 litres of cargo space.

The Mini John Cooper Works available in self-drive hire gives just the right taste of what JCW treatment will mean for the Countryman.  Our car also features the 16-valve engine, twin-scroll turbocharger, revamped manual gearbox, Dynamic Traction Control, and four-piston disc brakes for an enthralling experience.

The striking JCW-red with racing stripes offers an imagery that cannot be surpassed.  The front of the car is underscored with a black ventilation grill, fog lamps, and fins. The wide wheel base and ground-hugging road clearance hint at what the car was built for.   The distinction of this car carries throughout engineering and bodywork and into a superb short-term hire experience.
