New Mercedes GLC Unveiled

New Mercedes GLCThe GLK is being replaced by the GLC, OK? For those less familiar with the Mercedes naming conventions, this essentially means that we’re getting a new compact SUV from Mercedes Benz. Taking on the likes of the Audi Q5 and Porsche Macan, the car uses every trick in the marque’s arsenal to ensure it’s a competitive offering. Take the styling, for example, which blends elements of the GLA and the sleekness of the GLC Coupe concept to create something that looks ready for both the city streets and the bumpier countryside tracks. The defining feature is undoubtedly the size: it’s small enough to look sophisticated, but with curves that suggest considerable power lies inside.

The new car features some welcome improvements on the GLK. For example, the GLC has a longer wheelbase, meaning that passengers have more legroom and more spacious doorways. In the UK, the following variants will be available: GLC 220d, GLC 250d and GLC 250, all of which come with a nine speed gearbox and four-wheel drive. As you’ll see from the trailer, there is also a plug-in hybrid version, the GLC 350e, that adds 116 horsepower of electric motor to a 211 horsepower engine.

The off road pack gives you five programmes to choose from, including rocking assist, trailer, slippery and incline. Performance is also aided by steel springs and active dampers, as well as the fact the GLC has an aluminium body that makes it more than 80kg lighter than its predecessor. For those more interested in comfort, the interior comes with nappa leather, carbon fibre and wood trims, alongside an infotainment system and optional panoramic glass roof.
