Take the Road Less Travelled
Here within our very own borders, there exist some absolutely awe-inspiring scenic drives just waiting to feel the rubber of our car hire fleets tyres.
Here are some of the routes we recommend:
A1 – Gateshead, Tyne and Wear
Should you be heading North, do not miss out on rewarding your motorway miles with the magnificent view of Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North.
A3055 – Isle of Wight
Known locally as the Military Road, the road running to Freshwater Bay from Chale, runs along the stunning cliff edge, boasting sea to one side and never-ending downland to the other. At its highest points, this blessing of a road gifts drivers with a view of the whole coast, spread in front of you like one of the world’s prettiest, unspoilt paintings. Finish your trip with a visit to the Isle of Wight itself, and bask in the peacefulness of the sea and, hopefully, sunshine.
Full of coastal roads and country lanes, Belfast provides an exhilarating drive, with an abundance of extreme sports, quiet valleys and subterranean boat trips along the way to keep you occupied. Head up the Antrim Coast Road to the Giant’s Causeway, head inland to Magherafelt and challenge yourself to some treetop paintballing. Explore the Ancient Seat of Kings of Ulster at Navan Centre and Fort, and be sure to venture East and meet with the Mountains of Mourne. You can even try your hand at trout fishing if you head down to Drumgooland House!
Northumbria hides beneath its wings intriguing Roman ruins beside windswept islands and gorgeous public houses, making for an ideal self-drive tour within the United Kingdom. Begin at Langley Castle, and enjoy a circular tour crossing Hadrian’s Wall and heading North to Bellingham and Otterburn. Cross the border into Scotland and encounter the ruined abbey of Jedburgh, or visit the jail of Mary, Queen of Scots. Cross the border into England once again, and pass Kielder Water through the wonders of Kielder Forest. Visit the forts and sites at Bordoswald, Vindolanda, Housesteads and Chesters, all seeped in historical enchantment and demonstrating Roman life in this area from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD.
Many petrol heads aspire to complete the Evo Triangle; formed by sections of road from the A5, A543 and B4501, the Evo Triangle provides a 20-mile jaunt across picturesque rolling moorland. Full of a happy mix of twists, turns and straights, the stunning Welsh countryside challenges your technical driving and will absorb you in all of its charms.
