Land Rover is a luxury car marque that dominates the automotive market for four-wheel-drive vehicles. Owned by British multinational car manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover, Land Rover is regarded as a British icon, and was granted a Royal Warrant by King George VI in 1951.

The first ever vehicle to be produced by Land Rover, the Range Rover, in 1970 heralded a new era of 4x4 manufacturing. However, it was not until 1988 that the launch of the famous Discovery model hit the market. Land Rover went on to be sold to Tata Motors in 2008 and the launch of the popular Range Rover Evoque turned the company into a major global player.

But the history of land Rover extends much further back, ‘Rover’ produced cycles in the 1860’s, following the development of an electric bike in 1888 the Rover Cycle Company Limited went on to produce its first car in 1904. Two years later the company switched to car production only.

In 1933 Spencer Wilks became Managing Director and introduced new production methods and more prestigious vehicles. During the war, Rover factories are used in the war effort to produce engines for tanks and air crafts. Maurice Wilks himself used a Jeep, which he found most useful on his farm, but when it was coming to the end of its life, he found there was no suitable British replacement. He identified a gap in the market for a versatile land use vehicle that was less cumbersome than a tractor. The Land Rover project was born.

Described as "the all-purpose vehicle on the lines of the Willys-Overland post-war Jeep was the most desirable" using the P3 engine, gearbox, and back axle. In reality the first prototypes were already running, with design work starting in spring 1947. To meet capability demands, a 1.6 litre engine is added to the vehicles and two prototype 80-inch wheelbase Land Rovers are exhibited at the Amsterdam Motor Show. The vehicle is greeted with enthusiasm, enthralled by the motoring press and by 1951 the Land Rover out sell all other Rover vehicles 2 to 1.

During the 50’s the wheelbase is extended, engine size increased, and a diesel option is introduced alongside the familiar barrel-sided body design. Due to required chassis strengthening, the IIA Forward Control is too heavy for the 4 cylinder petrol engine; and a 6 cylinder petrol engine is fitted. Heavy duty axles and larger tyres are also fitted.

Land Rover celebrate production of the One Millionth Land Rover in 1976. Three years later a new development program begins to show success with a V8-engined 109" Land Rover dubbed the "Stage One" which featured a grille flush with the wings to allow room for the larger engine.

During the early 80's modern styling, and coil springs are introduced. A 130 in extra-long wheelbase version is also produced. By 1990 the Discovery, aimed at the new family 4x4 market, was launched, this model still had enviable off-road abilities. 90" and 110" vehicles re-branded as 'Defender'. By 1194 the Range Rover is completely re-modeled. The modern P38 Range Rover is aimed more at the on-road luxury SUV market, but is still a good off-road performer unlike most of the competition.

1997 saw the arrival of the Freelander. Designed to compete against small 4x4s the Freelander departed from standard Land Rover design technologies, with a monocoque body and independent strut suspension. The Freelander quickly becomes Europe's best selling 4x4. The Discovery Series II followed a year later. In 2004 the Discovery 3 is launched with a significant re-styling.

In 2008, Land Rover unveiled their ERAD diesel-electric technology inside two Freelander 2 concept vehicles. This allowed the vehicle to move without the engine starting. It also supplied additional power to tackle tough terrain. Also, in 2008, Land Rover showcased their hybrid concept, the LRX. The ERAD system allowed the car to drive on its electric power at speeds of less than 20 mph. This design later became the Evoque but didn’t have the ERAD features.

In 2013, Land Rover unveiled the All-Terrain Electric Defender. It produced zero emission and lasted for a maximum of eight hours prior to needing a recharge. By 2017, Land Rover announced that all vehicles by 2020 would either be a hybrid or all-electric. To make good on that promise, they released their first plug-in hybrid, the Range Rover Sport P400e in 2018.
