Performance
Bentley’s engineers have surpassed themselves with this new four-wheel drive Bentley Continental GT, now available to rent on a self-drive hire basis in London from Signature Car Hire. The three-chamber air suspension, for example, is unique to the GT, on its softest setting this produces 60 per cent more air volume than before, which along with the new 48-volt electric active roll control, ensures previously unobtainable levels of comfort and agility on the road can be achieved. For those interested in the safety stats, the brakes are the biggest of any current production car, too, measuring 420mm at the front and 380mm at the rear.
Look under the bonnet and you will notice the GT is still powered by an impressive 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12. It has been moved further back by 150mm which makes this rental Bentley feel sharper and more balanced. The engine has been re-engineered with new cylinder heads to allow both direct and indirect fuel injection and cylinder-shutdown variable-displacement running. This produces 626bhp and 664lb ft, a 44bhp improvement on the car’s direct predecessor.
If you are looking for a power packed self-drive hire Bentley, then you’ be delighted to hear this new Continental sprints effortlessly from 0-60mph in just 3.6 seconds and will keep accelerating to 207mph. The car handles bends well with excellent traction, stability and control. This is a driver’s car.
On this model Bentley have also introduced an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox with a dual-mass flywheel and a drive system that sends torque firstly to the rear axle but can divert just under half of it to the front axle if needed.
To Drive
Drivers are spoiled with a choice of modes, including Comfort, Bentley and Individual. In Comfort mode up to 38 per cent of the engine’s torque will reach the front axle, which means the GT essentially feels like a cosseting four wheel-drive luxurious saloon. At the same time the maps for the dampers, throttle, gearbox, ESP and exhaust all rest into their most relaxed and least intrusive settings, and as such the GT goes properly into gentle mode.
In Custom mode you can alter everything to your own tastes, should you wish. The Bentley mode, the one in which Bentley engineers believe the car gives its best performance on the road, achieves a sportier drive whilst retaining its refinement.
Select the Sport mode to fully appreciate how far Bentley has gone with the car’s dynamics, it is far beyond anything you might expect on your Bentley Gt car hire experience. 17 per cent of drive goes to the front axle, and everything else is set to deliver maximum sporting adventure. And the electronic suspension ensures you really experience that GT driving pleasure without losing its comfort and refinement on the road.
Comfort
The cars acceleration and speed do not impact on comfort. On your GT car hire experience, you’ll enjoy sumptuous leather seats which are plush and luxurious; there is no doubt you’ll feel relaxed on the road.
For a rental sports car there is still plenty of space up front, and the electric seats adjust in every direction making it easy to adjust to the most ideal driving position. This model is slightly bigger in all dimensions but most notably between the axles, where more than 100mm has been added to the wheelbase.
Technology, build and efficiency
This rental Bentley GT is refined, but there are plenty of tech features for the gadget lover, including real-time traffic info and Apple CarPlay.
The car’s frame is constructed from a combination of aluminium and high-strength steel and is then built with a superformed aluminium bodywork, except for at the rear, where a composite plastic bootlid features. At the front there are double wishbones with a multi-link arrangement at the rear, with a three-chamber air suspension system with 48V electronically active anti-roll bar, all combined produce great driver control.
Combined fuel economy is 23.2mpg with 278g/km emissions.
