Bentley Flying Spur Successor To Inherit The Genes Of Continental

The 2014 Bentley Flying Spur is due to launch with all the development inherited from the latest Continental. This exciting news means that both eight and twelve cylinder engines will be available.

The new Flying Spur sibling of the Continental is well on its way to becoming a real member of the Bentley family.

Finally free of camouflage as the prototype appears on the roads in its final phase of development and testing, it is possible to see what the upcoming car will look like. There is also an interesting clue as to what lies below the bonnet.

True Continental cues are revealed in the more vertical front grill, redesigned bumpers, and revised front and rear light clusters. The roofline sports a shapelier silhouette, especially where it merges into the boot of the car.

What is of additional interest in the latest photographs though is that there may be more than just the W12 engine format available.  Spotted under the rear bumper are the figure-of-eight exhaust pipes, signifying the V8 engine which was co-developed with Audi. This should not be a surprise since the twin-turbo 4.0 litre V8 and all of its 500 hp is already to be found in the new Continental GT Coupé and GTC convertible.

This is great news indeed, as the model is still fully expected to be available in a choice of either V8 or the signature W12. The lighter-weight engine, with still ample power, or the heavier more powerful version, should each offer a truly exceptional and spirited drive.

Probably the only problem with this car however is that it won’t be available yet for the best part of two years. The question thus arises of what to do until then. To give you a taste of what it means to drive a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, it is possible to take either of the two Flying Spur Speeds in the fleet for a self-drive or chauffeur-drive experience.

For instance, and new for 2012, the Flying Spur Speed in Sand White exterior with White Linen leather interior provides a sensory journey of note.

By releasing the new model, Bentley have performed the impossible, and improved on perfection. The silhouette of the current car not only includes reminisces of the Bentley Speed models of the Roaring Twenties, but manages to combine a stately presence with a racy undertone. This car is truly at the pinnacle of supreme motoring.

The cocoon of luxury that is the passenger cabin of this ultimate wraps you in sumptuous craftsmanship using only the best materials available. At every touch point, your body is engaged by the softest leather, full-grained wood veneer, plush carpeting, spacious seating, enlightening visual displays, and enticing sounds delivered by the Naim audio system.

This is the perfect car to experience for yourself the magic of Bentley’s W12 engine. The 6.0-litre delivers 600 BHP for urban commuting and comfortable cruising over longer distances.  What is quite astonishing however is the maximum torque of 750 Nm, achieving 62 mph from a standstill in just 4.5 seconds, remarkable for such a majestic car.
