Rolls Royce With a Difference to Go Under the Hammer

For those who can make it to Monaco, and who have access to one million pounds at short notice, there is a sale of interest soon to take place.

A 1958 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I two-seater Drophead Coupe is being put up for auction next week at Bonham’s in Monaco.  The successful bid for this convertible classic is expected to be not less than £1 million.

The car will certainly appeal to a non-traditional Rolls Royce purchaser.  As ostentatious as it is stylish, this aftermarket miracle started its rebirth when it was delivered as a chassis to the coachworks who received the commission to build it for a Manchester Freemason.   It is one of only two made and has only just clocked 42,000 miles.  It has Cadillac-style vertical tail fins, an electric bonnet, two-tone paint and tyres, a vintage scarlet leather and Walnut interior, no rear seats and a cocktail bar in the large boot.  Due to these last two features it was christened the Honeymoon Express when launched.  The roof is hydraulic and is completely hidden when stowed.

According to Rolls Royce Historian Phillip Brooks ‘Freestone and Webb came up with several rather flamboyant designs for saloons and Dropheads, of which this car and its sisters were the ultimate examples.  They all remain controversial designs, with both fans and haters. Having seen one in the flesh, so to speak, I can say that the Dropheads really do look lovely.  They are a lot more beautiful in the flesh than they are in photographs.  Taking one of these on a honeymoon would be a glorious experience, but the bridal couple would certainly not be inconspicuous on their trip.’
