Land Rover & the Silk Trail

The Silk Trail is one of the most famous routes in the world thanks to its historic connection with trade and commerce. 3 Range Rover Diesel Hybrids were chosen to go on the expedition which was meant to be across 13 countries. These countries included France, Belgium, Poland, Germany, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and China. The expedition followed the Silk Trail for most of the journey to keep as true to the 2,500 year route for as much as possible.

When the expedition arrived at the split of the Silk route of the north and south roads, the expedition did something different by going on a mountainous road near Kashgar in China to see what the Range Rovers could achieve in this terrain.

Peter Richings, the Hybrids and Electrification Director of JLR said: “The world’s first diesel hybrid expedition along the Silk Trail pioneered an ambitious route across Europe and Asia that would have been impassable to most other types of vehicle – but no matter how hostile the conditions, the Range Rover Hybrid prototypes took it all in their stride”.

The Silk Trail expedition highlighted the power and performance of Range Rover’s new Hybrids. In addition to being able to handle the tough terrain of the Silk route, the Hybrids also are able to give excellent fuel economy for long journeys and they also have carbon emission advantages. The success of the Silk Trail expedition proves the Range Rover is ready for any challenge in front of it.
