The Ultimate Car Ride: the 911

Since 1963, the 911 has been part of our psyche, car culture and pop culture in general. Porsche released the car and the model has built up a cult-like status in the car community even amongst fans of other marques.

How Porsche weaved technology into the classic 911

Times change and car technology updates and improves and the 911 has moved with the times without losing its classic silhouette. We have recently added a 911 Turbo S to our line-up and judging from the exterior styling, we know why the 911 is so popular.

What made Porsche stand out was the air mounted, rear-positioned engine. The 911 was the brainchild of Butzi Porsche, the grandson of Porsche founder Ferdinand Porsche, and began its days as a sports car with that same animated styling that GQ magazine calls a ‘bug-eyed look’ thanks to large gem-like headlamps. The new 911 has not sacrificed this ‘look’ as this is one of the, if not the most popular elements of the 911. Porsche have worked hard to strike a balance between the past, present and the future.

The front of the 911 has had its aerodynamics improved making it even more complex with the inclusion of a ram-air intake and a larger than before spoiler which are two important features for the future of the 911. Porsche knows that technology cannot be sacrificed for heritage which is why the new model features a 3.8 litre powerhouse to accompany drivers on trips. Porsche’s commitment to technology shows the marque including the PDK transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung) which is essentially built on dual-clutch technology. This means there is no manual option as part of Porsche’s desire to automate its technology.

The reason why this car is seen as the ride of a lifetime by GQ is its performance credentials. The 911 soars from 0 – 60 mph in only 3.5 seconds. The top speed is delicious just to read at 196 mph. The sports car is also said to rev up to 9,000 rpm which should satisfy enthusiasts who want heritage cars to continue performing at the highest level. The 911’s delivery after 50 years of development and precision is legendary.
