New Mercedes SL Goes on Sale Next Spring

mercedes SlMercedes has just revealed their 2016 update to the SL convertible, which will be available from April this year. The Mercedes SL has its origins in the SL 300 Racing, which appeared in 1952. This ground-breaking car was swiftly followed by two gullwing models in 1954, which are now worth a small fortune if you can find one! Fast forward to 2016 and Mercedes have created a beautiful tribute to this 60 year old model, which echoes their modern design principles as well as the history of the car.

There are some immediately noticeable changes, such as its much more aggressive look – something created by enlarged air intakes, a more shapely front grille and two “power domes” on the bonnet. The SL will come with the same engine options as before: 6, 8 and 12 cylinders, and there will even be two AMG models that will be able to do 0-62MPH in around four seconds.

The car’s hard top roof can now be retracted or closed at speeds of up to 25MPH, while the addition of LED headlights brings it more in line with other cars in the Mercedes range. Inside, there are lights projecting the Mercedes logo which come in a range of colours, and the connectivity options have been increased. There are two USB sockets between the seats, and you can also upgrade to the Apple CarPlay system, which allows you to access iPhone functions on the move.

As befits a 21st century Mercedes, the car comes with a host of technological options. Active Body Control, for example, reduces body roll in corners and even reduces the effects of hard acceleration on passengers – meaning that your passengers will never again get car sick! You can also opt for the Mercedes Distance Pilot and Steering Pilot systems, which ensure your car is always kept a safe distance from other cars and can navigate around tricky bends in roads.

Mercedes will confirm the pricing of the car early next year, until then we’ll have to content ourselves with gazing at the gorgeous pictures.
