The 10 Qualities of a Great Leader

great-leaderEveryone has their own definition of good leadership, usually formed – at least in part – by seeing what other people do well – and more importantly, not so well! While there is no magic formula that will instantly turn you into a great leader, there are certain qualities that appear in the best leaders time and time again. Take a look at the list below, and see whether any of these apply to you, or where you think there might be need for improvement.

1. Able to develop talent in others

You can’t be a good leader without having a team to lead, and the best bosses will ensure that their team is every bit as good as they are. Whether it’s investing in training, spotting underdeveloped skills or having faith that people can succeed at new things, great leaders always put their team first.

2. Dedicated

The best people lead by example, throwing themselves into their work. You need to develop a reputation for being able to get things done, and for putting the hard work in, if you’re going to be respected by your team and stakeholders.

3. Honest

Being a good leader is all about earning trust, and being seen to act in an ethical way that people admire. You won’t made any progress by weaving a web of lies to cover your failures, or hard times. Instead be honest, and people will respect you for it.

4. Able to communicate and inspire

 5. Confident

A great leader never panics in public. Your first duty to your team is to keep up morale, and to keep them focused on the bigger picture. If you’re calm, your staff will be reassured, but if you panic then they will too!

6. Creative

While there are many business manuals, there’s no step-by-step guide to how to run your business. Sometimes you’ll need to take risks, think laterally and – dare we say it – make it up as you go along. Without a creative attitude towards business you’re constantly at risk of being overtaken by more competitive rivals.

7. Able to build relationships

Businesses run on people, and people are far more likely to help you if they like you. The great leaders remember every name, always find common ground and share jokes where possible, allowing them to build fruitful relationships that will last for years to come.

8. Humble

There is always more to learn, and always a chance that you’re not right. The best leaders know that they have a lot to learn and are keen to expand their horizons. They’re also not snobbish about where the information comes from.

9. Able to think strategically and solve problems

A huge part of a leader’s role is problem solving, whether the problems are your own or the ones others bring to you. Leaders need the ability to find viable ways around problems, whilst never deviating from the overall strategic plan. It’s a bit like keeping all the plates spinning at the same time!

10. Passionate

If you can’t spontaneously deliver a speech about why you love your job and your business, you’re in the wrong job. The best leaders love what they do, and as such every one of their actions is coloured with passion and enthusiasm. This is infectious, which is why you can’t be a great leader if you don’t have passion.
